About the place

West Cliff is characterised by its chines (deep cut and often quite beautiful valleys used as pathways to the beach - generally densely wooded with pine trees) - bounded by Durley Chine to the East, then Middle chine in the middle and then Alum Chine directly below Westbourne.

Great views from the cliff for the Airshow but not much else going on as it's all down on the beach.

Chineside Café Durley Chine

One for the summer – we have taken over the whole place in the past with the sound system on the upstairs terrace and volleyball and SUPs on the beach.

In the winter is a good place to stop for tea and cake or a mini Chineside breakfast if you are walking or cycling the prom (tho if you are hungrier the Harvester next door has a huge range of options).

The glass sided upper terrace is a proper suntrap – sometimes almost too hot (they don’t put up parasols due to the potential for them blowing onto the prom) but early and late summer it’s a great way to catch some sun without the wind.

Harvester Durley Chine

Big pub, big portions, big value (unlimited salad etc).

Like all Harvesters the décor is seventies avant-garde but that’s more than compensated by the lack of soul – definitely a ‘you get what you pay for’ place. It’s cheap and that works well for families and pensioners with early bird specials and plenty of fried food. Toilets are clean.

Vesuvio’s Alum Chine

Italian eatery right on the prom that sometimes has Jazz nights. It has a medium size glass-shielded terrace out the front – popular with dog walkers as its next to the dog friendly beach.
