Club Blog

The blog is just for members and it's where stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else goes.

As you may know I've created a BeachPeople video channel on YouTube ready for the new season, and it's already attracting comments!

Two to be precise, but they were nice and its all good exposure for the Club (no pun intended, or indeed present).

But that's just the Club channel and you may have...

Just a quick update in lieu of the pubs and restaurants opening up tomorrow for outdoor-only service (in 8 degrees C with a steady Northerly.. lovely!)

You will be required to sign in - you can do that without the app tho (i.e. on paper) and the venue is under no obligation to verify what you put...

Phil I have emailed the Bath Hotel and the Cumberland to see what their plans are as they have the best outdoor space. The Savoy has a great garden but it's undergoing a serious refurb right now - good job as it was really tired in there! 2 days ago

It seems that BeachPeople's hosting company is under DDoS attack or similar - the site is up for now (obv) but if it goes down that'll be why - we haven't gone anywhere!

Phil Outcome : the attacks had no effect on the Club site 5 days ago

They are pricey as you'd expect (prices here www.getlostpowerboattraining.com/boat-club/) but boats aint cheap. It may be that...

This is the track a small whirlwind left in the fine sand on the prom yesterday - so if you ever see this you'll know what caused it!

According to BCP the drones will be used for assessing the amount of litter left on the beach and that may indeed be their initial thinking. But once established, the thinking can easily switch to 'what else can we use these for?' - revenue generating of course so that would include photographing illegally parked cars and sending penalties automatically, recording footage for later prosecution and fines of individuals breaking minor byelaws - even down to lighting a BBQ before 6pm - all that's needed is a £200 penalty notices posted plus drone surveillance and there's free money. It may prove too tempting to 'tax the tourists' as they don't vote here.Patrolling the coastline daily and recording sewage slicks, then penalising the polluters under recent legislation - that makes a lot of sense and has zero chance of being put into place (tourists don't have legal teams to defend them or deep pockets for lobbying). The road to hell is paved with good intentions.. no reason not to do it, but I question what oversight is being applied to limiting their application.Article from the Daily Mail here: https://bit.ly/3sS76sI..

I've just created a BeachPeople video channel on YouTube ready for the summer - for now there's just a tester up there so that I could see how it all works (bit of fin swim footage from last summer) - here's the link:

Great to see things starting to pick up - it's the first warm day of the season and the kiters and surfers are making the most of it.

All it takes is a little sun..

Wow! I just checked the rainfall radar (here bit.ly/2PG4EXj) and I had to zoom out past Cardiff before I could find a cloud.. I was concerned it was broken!

Foiling off the beaches is rapildy becoing a hot potato (see the Surfers group as to why) so I have written to the councillor responsible for BCP tourism to try and head off an outright ban:

"Hello Mohan

I run a BeachPeople, an Ocean Sports club based in Sandbanks, so I tend to get involved in...

BeachPeople brings you.. BeachHampers!

Actually I need to assemble a thank-you hamper to my accountants for saving me from the HMRC's new 'penalise first, ask questions later' approach, so I took the opportunity to check out two different types of hamper.

Since I don't often don a pair of red...

Couple of snaps of something in the water off East Cliff (near the Cumberland) - ferry conveniently positioned for scale.

Seems to be stiffer than a mass of seaweed would be..

In warmer times I'd swim out to see but its March so stuff that.

It's floating low enough for kelp but why is it hanging...

This is going to come across as weird as these things are predominantly for trout fishing (the neoprene is for warmth I assume, as if they weren't waterproof too then the boots would fill up with water) ..but One of the big things I missed throughout the winter was wading. Don't knock it 'til you've tried it - 5km in waist to chest-high water is a workout, but the peace, tranquillity, sun on your back and unobstructed views (plus getting up close and personal to boats - always a good thing) is not to be sneered at. Choose the right music and there are none of the problems that humanity bestows on us in seemingly limitless measure onshore. About the only drawback with wading is that your eyes can be bum-height to fat late-middle-aged SUP people in ugly swimsuits and they move about the same speed whilst they 'exercise'; that is absolutely not a good experience. (Searching for "World record SUP speed" yields a website all about yoga, kettlebells and pushups. hm. https://recordsetter.com/paddleboard-world-records) . The water is way too cold right now for jammers and shorts, but the sun is warm and the air is clear so insulated waders and a rough direction are a good solution to what's been happening over the last seventeen years of lockdown...I may invest.

Two photos today - hopeful surfers enjoying the sub in their 5 mils, and pretty much the lowest tide I've seen at my legally permitted haunt.

The new widget shows it to be a 100% full moon and 16:31 is the the low tide - roughly when this photo was taken - so this is as low as she goes in Poole...

And for no other reason...
